10 Signs Your Body May Be Stuck in Protection Mode
Have you ever felt like your body is constantly on high alert?
Perhaps you’re experiencing pain that doesn’t seem to make sense, you’re exhausted despite resting, or small stresses seem to have a bigger impact on your body than they used to.
If so, you’re not alone.
At Osteopathy For All, many of the people we see have been told that their scans are normal, their blood tests are fine, or that there is “nothing seriously wrong.” Yet they still don’t feel well. They may be living with persistent pain, fatigue, digestive symptoms, headaches, muscle tension, or a sense that their body is working against them.
One explanation for this is that the nervous system has become sensitised or stuck in what we often call “protection mode.”
The good news? Protection mode is not a life sentence. The nervous system is adaptable and capable of change. And we are here to walk the path with you.
What Is Protection Mode?
Your nervous system is designed to keep you safe.
When it detects danger, stress, illness, injury, or overwhelm, it activates protective responses. These responses can be incredibly helpful in the short term.
However, sometimes the nervous system continues to behave as though danger is present long after the original threat has passed.
When this happens, the body can become more sensitive, more reactive, and more vigilant.
This isn’t a sign of weakness. It’s a sign that your nervous system has been working very hard to protect you.
10 Signs Your Nervous System May Be Stuck in Protection Mode
1. You Have Persistent Pain That Doesn’t Fully Add Up
Perhaps you’ve been told your tissues have healed, yet the pain remains.
Modern pain science shows that pain can continue when the nervous system becomes highly sensitised, even when significant tissue damage is no longer present.
2. You Feel Tired All the Time
Living in protection mode requires energy.
Many people describe feeling exhausted despite sleeping or resting.
3. Your Symptoms Flare During Stress
Do symptoms increase during busy periods, family difficulties, work pressures, or emotional challenges?
This is incredibly common and reflects the close connection between the brain, nervous system, and body.
4. You Feel Stiff, Tight, or Guarded
Muscles often increase their tension when the nervous system perceives threat.
Many people feel permanently tight despite stretching, massage, or exercise.
5. Sleep Isn’t Refreshing
Difficulty getting to sleep, waking frequently, or feeling unrefreshed can all be signs that the nervous system is struggling to fully switch off.
6. You Experience Digestive Symptoms
The gut and nervous system are closely connected.
Bloating, IBS symptoms, food sensitivities, nausea, and digestive discomfort can all be influenced by nervous system regulation.
7. You Feel Overwhelmed by Things You Once Managed Easily
When the nervous system is overloaded, everyday demands can feel far more challenging.
8. Movement Feels Frightening or Unpredictable
Perhaps you’ve become worried about bending, lifting, walking, or exercising because you’re afraid of triggering symptoms.
Fear and protection can sometimes create a cycle that keeps symptoms going.
9. Your Body Feels Hyper-Aware
Many people notice they are constantly scanning their body for symptoms, checking pain levels, or worrying about what sensations might mean.
Again, this is a protective response, not a personal failing.
10. You Feel Like You’ve Lost Trust in Your Body
This may be the most important sign of all.
Many people living with persistent symptoms begin to feel that their body is broken or unreliable.
One of the most rewarding parts of our work is helping people rebuild confidence in their bodies and reconnect with a sense of safety.

She works with gentle osteopathy alongside advice on nervous system regulation techniques.
Grace Whistler

Grace has a special interest in hypermobility, “bendy bodies,” and the relationship between physical symptoms and nervous system sensitivity. As someone who understands hypermobility personally, she brings both professional expertise and genuine empathy to her work.
Grace works with more classical osteopathic techniques and guides patients with individualised movement practices suitable for their body and nervous system.
Pippa Cossens

Pippa has undertaken extensive training in modern pain science, neuroplastic symptoms, and mind-body approaches through organisations including SIRPA. She is passionate about helping people understand the powerful connection between the brain, body, and nervous system in recovery.
Pippa work with gentle hands on regulating techniques alongside pain reprocessing and emotional awareness.
Recovery Starts With Understanding
One of the most powerful things we see in clinic is the moment someone realises:
“My body isn’t broken. It’s trying to protect me.”
Understanding why symptoms happen can reduce fear, increase confidence, and begin to change how the nervous system responds.
If any of these signs sound familiar, we’d love to help and walk the path to change with you.
Whether you’re living with persistent pain, hypermobility, fatigue, tension, recurring symptoms, or simply feel disconnected from your body, our team is here to listen.
